Northeastern University Police are investigating an incident that occurred on Thursday, Oct. 18, in which a religious artifact was ripped from the door of the university’s Hillel.

Security camera footage shows an unidentified suspect removing the mezuzah — a case containing parchment paper inscribed with writing from the Torah, which Jews affix to their doorways as a constant reminder of God’s presence.

In an email to the community, the university’s president, Joseph E. Aoun, called the act one of “senseless hate.” Seth Helman reports.
