The Jamaica Pond and the Arnold Arboretum give residents miles of walking paths, bike lanes, and greenery, making JP an oasis in the middle of the city. Residents reported feeling generally safe in the area, and crime rates support their comfort.  JP is safer than 58% of cities in Massachusetts, and the neighborhood’s crime rate is 4% lower than the national average according to Area Vibes. It seems that one of the largest concerns about green space in Jamaica Plain does not involve humans at all – it’s unleashed dogs running wild in the Arnold Arboretum. On August 19, a great blue heron was killed by two unleashed dogs in the luscious green space, resulting in a new sign placed at the Arboretum’s entrance requiring owners to leash their dogs.
