Boston University women’s hockey looked poised to take down their Comm Ave. rivals, the Eagles of Boston College, last night, but ultimately fell short.
The Terriers tied the game at two apiece early in the third period, gaining momentum and poised to avenge their loss in Chestnut Hill the night prior. But as it turned out, it was another BC victory in the The Green Line Rivalry.
BC’s Emma Conner scored on a tip-in with 3:18 remaining in regulation to lift the Eagles over the Terriers 3-2 Friday night at Agganis Arena.
“(This is) probably the toughest loss so far this year, but for all the good reasons,” BU head coach Tara Watchhorn said. “Obviously, a great game, I felt it was one of the best ones we’ve played. Commitment to the plan, the environment, the maturity in our game, all of it, so not the outcome we wanted, but a lot of positives to take from it.”
After a defensive-centered first 16 minutes and 12 seconds of a combined seven blocks and no goals, BC and BU traded goals within 29 seconds of one another — Conner scored on a short-handed goal before BU’s leading scorer, senior Sydney Heaney, tied it up on a power play.
Less than three minutes later, BC senior Kate Ham scored on a power play with 8.8 seconds remaining in the first period to take a 2-1 lead, which matched the first period result between the two schools on Thursday night at BC.
The second period saw another physical rock fight, this time with zero goals, albeit five combined power plays between the Terriers and Eagles. BU’s 14 second period saves authored by grad goalie Michelle Pasiechnyk helped the team only trail by one goal entering the final period.
Following a penalty of two many players on the ice issued to BC at the 16:17 mark of the third period, BU was able to secure a power play. Just a second after the power play ended, senior Clara Yuhn scored off a rebound from a shot by sophomore Keira Healey, tying the game at two apiece. Yuhn’s fifth goal of the season sparked an eruption from the 3,965 BU faithful. This attendance set a Hockey East regular-season record.
“It’s the main reason I came here,” Yuhn said of the crowd postgame. “Just the feeling that you get of being a BU hockey player and knowing the support that we have of the administration and of the university and of the fans and of the Dawg Pound and the BU band. … I know going into next week we’re going to be fired up going into Providence.”
BU (2-10, 2-4 Hockey East) will take on Providence (4-8-1, 2-3-1) on Friday, Nov. 21, at Walter Brown Arena.
