Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-M.A., is backing New York City Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani, and says she sees the self-described democratic-socialist as the future of the Democratic party.
When asked if the Democratic party is what Mamdani’s socialist policies should look like, Warren responded with, “you bet,” while speaking to press at an affordable childcare event in New York City on Monday.
“New York City is the place to start the conversation for Democrats on how affordability is the central issue, the central reason to be a Democrat,” Warren said.
Warren added that she thinks “Republicans are right to tie this race to the national race.”
Warren voiced her support for Mamdani earlier that day during an interview on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, saying that Mamdani’s key to winning the Democratic nomination was focusing on affordability.
“He comes in and talks about how to make New York City affordable for families,” Warren said. “He says we got to talk about housing, we got to talk about the price of groceries, and we got to talk about childcare.”
“That’s why I think this race in New York City is so important, because Zohran managed to win by talking about affordability. Democrats across this country will win by talking about affordability.”
Mamdani secured the nomination for New York City’s Democratic primary early last month after announcing his candidacy for mayor in a post to X during October 2024.
Over the past ten months, the 33-year-old New York State Assemblyman representing Queens in New York City has run a campaign promoting city-owned grocery stores, fare-free buses and freezing rent.
Warren has promoted policies including increasing taxes on corporations and promoting universal childcare, both of which Mamdani is in favor of.
The Massachusetts senator also shared her support for Mamdani’s “massive victory in New York City” and his campaign’s focus on affordability in a video posted to X on Sunday, her second time endorsing Mamdani after first endorsing him this past June.
“He’s not afraid to take on the billionaires and the giant corporations to make New York more affordable,” Warren said in her video. “I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Zohran Mamdani is New York’s best choice for mayor.”
Warren’s office did not respond for comment on the video or the senator’s endorsement of Mamdani.
