This summer students from across the country will gather in the Berkshires for the 50th time as the Boston University Tanglewood Institute celebrates half a century of training young musicians in the idyllic setting of Western Massachusetts.
The institute will take place from June 20th through August 13 at Tanglewood, a wooded complex of teaching and performance spaces in Lennox that is well-known as the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. High school and early college-age musicians are selected through a rigorous audition process to participate in intensive workshops in orchestra, wind ensemble, voice, opera, piano, composition and harp.
The student musicians will perform over 70 concerts at Tanglewood and in the surrounding communities, including a 50th Anniversary Celebration Concert on August 6 at the Seji Ozawa Hall at Tanglewood. This show will feature specially commissioned works by composers and program alumni Nico Mulhy and Timo Andres.
As part of a new intensive program for up and coming opera singers, students will present a full performance of Strauss’ “Die Fledermaus” on July 1 and 2 at the West Street Theater in Lennox. The institute’s Young Artists Orchestra and Chorus will also appear alongside the BSO and the Boston Pops at the annual Tanglewood on Parade celebration, August 2.
