12-point efforts from juniors Liz Shean and Sydney Johnson were not enough for Boston University, as the women’s basketball team fell 57-51 to Yale at Case Gym on Wednesday, going 2-3 overall this season.
In addition to missing forward Riley Childs, while BU’s star players—Johnson and Emily Esposito— found themselves struggling.
The student band didn’t get a chance to sing “Esposito,” , a spin-off of the hit song “Despacito ”, as Esposito couldn’t find her groove Wednesday. The senior scored only four points while shooting 22.2% from the field while contributing three turnovers.
Meanwhile, Johnson had a rare off-game and struggled with foul trouble throughout the match, collecting four personal fouls. However, the guard also managed to score in double digits with 12 points across 24 minutes on the court.
Other players that shined for the Terriers were guards Liz Shean and Sophie Beneventine and forward, Chiara Tibbitt. Shean, who was coming off hot from BU’s last game against Maine, scored her second consecutive double figures, scoring 12 on Wednesday, days after shooting 11 against the Black Bears.
Beneventine and Tibbitt scored a combined 10 points each off the bench. A key positive for BU was the strength of its reserves, which combined for a total of 23 points.
For Yale, Camilla Esbo dominated the paint, scoring 17 points and gathered 9 rebounds, while teammate Christen McCann drained some tough three-pointers at crucial moments of the second half to give the Bulldogs their first lead in the game.
It was the second time in four days that the Terriers collapsed in the second half. In their loss against Maine on Sunday, BU was 28-22 as they stepped into the third quarter, before losing 59-57. On Wednesday, they were up 27-23 at the break.
The Terriers will start a three-game road trip this weekend, starting Saturday, Nov. 27 with their first face-off against Harvard University at 2 p.m.
