BOSTON – The 56th Head Of The Charles Regatta attracted hundreds of rowers and spectators to the Charles River this past weekend, returning after a long wait since the event was cancelled for two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
With its full schedule of races on Oct. 23 and 24, as well as two-hour additional racing on the morning of Friday, Oct. 22, it gave more opportunities for athletes to participate in the event and row for their teams with 64 races in total taking place.
The Regatta includes races for youths, veterans, lightweights and masters. The sporting event first started in 1965 and has been the largest rowing race in the world with 11,000 rowers registered.
About 2,000 volunteers ensure the event runs smoothly. The ages of competitors range from 17-year-old young rowers to athletes in their 90s, according to the HOCR Office.
