BOSTON – Temperatures recorded this month marked the city’s warmest January of the decade, so much so that Sunday’s snowfall may have come as a surprise to local residents. Just two weeks ago, the season reached an unexpected high of 73 degrees, making room for more tank tops and flip-flops across Boston than down jackets or boots.
According to the data provided by Weather Underground, the highest recorded temperature in January throughout the past decade was 60 degrees, which happened in 2013, 2017 and 2018.
At the same time, the lowest recorded temperature this month has also increased significantly, reaching a decade high of 14 degrees.
Despite the head-turning heat, Boston residents can expect more predictable winter weather in the coming weeks. The National Weather Service reveals that the highest temperature expected in the next seven days is 45 degrees, with the chance of another snowfall towards the end of next week.
Still, as climate change continues to make local headlines, another surprise may not be unrealistic.
